At Deutsches Test Institut (DTI), products are assessed holistically from a consumer perspective. For foods and dietary supplements, the performance of the test requires the manufacturer to provide corresponding external laboratory analyses. DTI does not conduct its own laboratory analyses. The submitted documents are not verified in terms of their content, but are assessed exclusively from a consumer perspective with regard to plausibility and recognizable assignment to the tested product. The manufacturer is solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of these documents. Further information on classification can be found in our article “Food Warnings, Product Tests and Consumer Protection”.

P1 - Product packaging & sustainability
Category description
This test category examines the quality and sustainability of the original packaging in all relevant dimensions: protective effect, information content, material ecology, volume efficiency and sensory safety. It is assessed whether the packaging reliably protects the product from damage, provides all necessary information clearly and completely, uses resources efficiently and enables environmentally friendly disposal. High-quality packaging not only contributes to product safety, but also strengthens consumer confidence and reduces environmental burdens.
Very good – "The product packaging makes a very good impression and provides excellent protection. All relevant requirements are met perfectly."
P2 - Scope of delivery & accessories
Category description
This is where it is determined whether a product is delivered complete, intact and immediately ready for use. The completeness, functionality of all parts, the quality of the instructions, internal safety and warning information, ergonomics and the accuracy of the accessories are checked. A complete, functional package avoids delays, increases customer satisfaction and reduces complaints or returns.
Good – "The product is essentially delivered as described. Minor deviations or superficial flaws barely affect usability, so the overall impression remains positive."
P3 - Material quality & visible safety
Category description
This test category assesses the materials used, their processing and compliance with visible safety requirements. Stability, surface quality, absence of harmful substances, material resistance and the legally required safety markings are tested. The aim is a product that is durable, robust and free from identifiable risks and thus meets the requirements of safety and quality in daily use.
Very good – "The product gives a high-quality and safe impression. No sharp edges, solid material quality, and no identifiable hazards – thoroughly convincing."
P4 - Ease of use & ergonomics
Category description
The focus here is on user-friendliness. Operating logic, handling, grip and holding comfort, adjustment options and points of view and access points are assessed. It is investigated how intuitively and fatigue-free a product can be used in different application situations. Ergonomic, clear operation increases safety, efficiency and satisfaction in use.
Very good – "Operation is very intuitive and ergonomic – buttons, displays, and settings are clearly structured and effortless. There is little to no room for criticism."
P5 - Performance & efficiency
Kategoriebeschreibung
Very good – "Excellent performance and efficiency: The product performs its main task quickly and resource-efficiently, without significant weaknesses."
P6 - Durability & resistance to stress
Category description
This is where it is tested how well a product withstands typical everyday loads and how resistant it is to wear and tear. Material fatigue, joint stability, surface resistance and functionality after repeated use are assessed. A durable product ensures long-term reliability and contributes to sustainable use of resources.
Very good – "The product proves to be extremely robust. Impact, friction, or moisture cause hardly any wear – longevity is highly probable."
P7 - Product-specific features
Category description
This test category includes special features and functions that are specifically important for the respective product group. Individual performance features, additional functions, technical features and unique selling points that go beyond generic criteria are assessed. The aim is a realistic, fair and comparable assessment that reflects the specific benefits of a product for the consumer.
Very good – "All product-specific features (functions, certificates) are met or exceeded exemplarily. A true highlight for its respective product category."

Summary note
This summary is based on the tester's subjective user experience and compactly summarizes personal impressions and practical observations during use. It is used exclusively for everyday classification from a consumer's point of view and is not part of the computational DTI evaluation. This does not replace an objective review, advice or binding assurance; legal claims are not based on this.
Experience report
Note on practical experience
The tester's subjective user experience — including previous experiences, expectations, and personal impressions during use. It reflects a personal, situational assessment and is not part of the DTI assessment. It does not replace objective examination or advice and does not establish any legal claims. The aim is to give consumers an assessment that is close to everyday life.

For consumers, the key factors for Manuka honey are verifiable origin, quality grade, and traceability. The New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka Honey made a particularly good impression in the test: the UMF and MGO values were clearly stated and plausibly substantiated by external documents. The batch-specific UMF certification, which can be verified via PureTrace's batch verification system, was particularly positive. The manufacturer's website also provides good guidance, as it clearly explains the Manuka product line and makes the differences between the variants clear and accessible to consumers. The MGO400+ variant is an exception within the tested product line: it is not marked as UMF-certified but has a laboratory report confirming its MGO content; from a consumer perspective, this can be a more affordably priced alternative within the product line.

In everyday use, the product is uncomplicated. The dark PET containers protect the honey from light exposure, are secure in hand, and are easy to open. The opening is large enough to cleanly remove the honey with a teaspoon or tablespoon. Also positive is the double tamper-evident seal, consisting of a safety ring and an inner seal, which would make any prior opening easily detectable.

Sensorially, the honey exhibited a typical Manuka profile without noticeable off-notes. Differences between the tested UMF and MGO levels were perceptible in color, consistency, and intensity. However, since color and consistency can vary due to batch, temperature, and storage conditions, the respective level cannot be reliably determined by taste or appearance alone. The crucial factors here are the available laboratory reports, certificates, and batch information. Nevertheless, a comparison showed that variants with higher MGO or UMF values tended to be more intense and robust, while lower levels were usually milder. Higher values can also be perceived as harsher or slightly more bitter in taste.

Minor limitations concerned individual packaging and labeling details. The tested variants were delivered without additional outer packaging; this meant that the containers and labels were more directly exposed during shipping and handling, resulting in visibly scratched or slightly damaged labels on some samples. Furthermore, some information is provided only in English, and very small details such as nutritional values are not comfortably readable for everyone.

Overall, the New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka Honey proved to be a coherent product with demonstrably high-quality honey and excellent traceability. Its strongest point lies in its transparent quality documentation: UMF certification, batch verification via PureTrace, and clear information about the product line provide consumers with a solid basis for realistically assessing each variant.

Note on assessment: At DTI, products are evaluated holistically from a consumer perspective. For food and dietary supplements, the testing process requires the manufacturer to provide corresponding external laboratory analyses. Our own laboratory analyses are not conducted. The health benefits of Manuka honey were also not assessed in this test.
